1600 Avenue sponsors The Hip Hop Leaders (HHL) Program International Year Round, After School, College Prep Program to promote higher education, technology, leadership, and empowerment of at-risk youth. In 2007 some of our major accomplishments include:
• Held Global Town Hall Meeting discussing negativity in hip hop as well as positive influence of hip hop in the community. The panel featured hip hop icons; DJ Premier of Gang Starr, Spinderella of Salt N Pepa, Quincy “QD III” Jones III, Jelly Roll, Mr. Fusion (formerly of MTV Europe), Topic, and Hen Gee of the Latin Froz and El Movimiento.
• Worked with Nick Cannon & Stop Hating Campaign to promote technology, diversity and cultural unity.
• Launched Hip Hop Leaders Program in the United Kingdom, partnering with London-based Mama Youth Organization.
• Brought Youth Leaders from the UK to attend the 2007 Hip Hop Leaders Conference International at UCLA.
• Held Networking, Business Management & Etiquette Workshop featuring Lil Fizz formerly of B2K and Nick Cannon.
• Held Marketing Workshop featuring Eddie Donaldson, co-founder of TMD, and Myles Kovacs, founder Dub Magazine.
• Established the Dovon Harris Scholarship Fund and Outstanding Conference Attendee Award in memory of Dovon Harris, an HHL student from Watts who was an innocent victim of gang violence.
• Held a Technology in Media Workshop featuring David Neuman, Program Director/President of Current TV.
• Held Technology and Entertainment Workshop featuring Quincy “QD 3” Jones III and Frank Satterwhite, Hip Hop Leaders Founder. Workshop gave detailed look at how technology makes entertainment possible.
• Conducted College Preparatory Classes at UCLA.
• Launched After School Program at Manual Arts High School. Manual Arts High School is one of the largest high schools in South Central Los Angeles. HHL continued to serve students attending Centennial High in Compton and Locke High in Watts.
• Coordinated off-site events such as a tour of MTV’s Pimp My Ride set at Galpin Auto Sports with host Mad Mike.
